元旦の夜でしたが、横峯さくら選手と宮里藍選手が
2人揃ってゴルフ番組に出演していました。
（宮里美香さんと聖志兄ちゃんもいたんですが）
 
なんか久しぶりという感じでした。
 
女子ツアーの人気は衰えを見せず、
この二人が日本で活躍していた時以上に
試合数も多いのですが、
なんか違うという感じがします。
 
イ・ボミはまあ素敵ですけど。
 
その所属するカテゴリーを一挙にブレイクさせる
スターというのがたまに出現します。
 
アイススケートでは、荒川静香・浅田真央という
両選手がダブルで立て続けに出現し、
TVの一大コンテンツとなりました。
 
以前にも伊籐みどりさんがいましたし、
現在では、両選手よりも実績としては上の
羽生選手がいますが、スターと言えたのは
荒川静香・浅田真央の両選手だったと思います。
 
ゴルフで言えば、やはりタイガー・ウッズです。
 
日本のTVにあんなに呼ばれたのは
ウッズだけであり、ダスティン・ジョンソンや
ジョーダン・スピースは呼ばれません。
（アメリカではアーノルド・パーマーが凄かったそうですが）
 
TVは視聴率を稼がなくてはなりませんので、
TVにどれだけ呼ばれるのかというのは
そのスター性の指針になります。
 
男子ゴルファーでは、石川遼君が図抜けていましたね。
 
彼をホストにした番組が作られ、
ゲストにビートたけしさんやタモリなど、
驚くほどの大物が出ていましたから。
 
松山英樹選手は日本人でマスターズに勝てるかも
と本気で思わせてくれている初めての選手です。
 
でも、ゴルフに薄い関心しか持たなかった女性層まで
騒がせた遼君のようなレベルには
至っていないと思います。
 
そして、さくらや藍ちゃんが
かつて、どれだけTVに出ていたことか。
 
2人とも決して美人だとか、
可愛いというのではないのですが、
人気がありました。
 
昨年春先の藍ちゃん引退フィーバーは
その人気の凄さを改めて証明したようなものです。
 
引退であそこまで報道されることは
なかなかないです。
 
私はさくらの方がより好きでしたが、
さくらというより、
さくらとあのお父さんが大好きでしたね。
 
初優勝時のインタビューは爆笑もので、
女子ゴルフ界に親子漫才コンピが誕生？
と思いました。
 
ボクシングもチャンピオンが
かつてないほど勢揃いしています。
 
でも、スターと言えたのは辰吉丈一郎選手と、
亀田親子をたまたま踏み台にしてしまった
内藤大介さんだけかもしれません。

Sakura and Ai
 

 
It was New Year’s Day evening, and both Sakura Yokomine and Ai Miyazato appeared on a golf program together.
(Mika Miyazato and Ai’s older brother Kiyoshi was also there.)
 
It felt like it had been a long time since I last saw it.
 
The popularity of the women’s tour shows no sign of waning,
and there are more tournaments now than when these two were active in Japan,
but it still feels like something is different.
 
Lee Bo-mi is pretty nice though.
 

 
Every once in a while, a star appears who instantly revitalizes the field in which he or she works.
 
In ice skating, the two skaters Shizuka Arakawa and Mao Asada appeared in quick succession,
and ice skating became a major TV event.
 
Before, there was Midori Ito, and now there is Hanyu, they have a better track record than both of them,
but I think it was Shizuka Arakawa and Mao Asada who could be called stars.
 
In golf, it’s Tiger Woods.
 
Woods is the only one who has been invited to Japanese TV that much,
and neither Dustin Johnson nor Jordan Spieth have been invited.
(I heard Arnold Palmer was amazing in America.)
 
Since TV has to earn high ratings,
how often a star is invited to appear on TV
is an indicator of their star quality.
 
Among the Japanese male golfers, Ryo Ishikawa stood out.
 
A show was made with him as the host, and some surprisingly big names, like Beat Takeshi and Tamori, appeared as guests.
 

 
Hideki Matsuyama is the first Japanese player who makes us think he could win the Masters.
 
But I don’t think he’s reached the same level as Ryo, who made waves among women who had little interest in golf.
 
And how often Sakura and Ai appeared on TV in the past?
 
With all due respect, I don’t think either of them were particularly beautiful or cute.
But they were very popular.
 
The fever that erupted when Ai retired early last spring was a testament to just how popular she is.
 
It’s rare for retirement to cause such a big fuss.
 
I liked Sakura more, but more than that,
I loved Sakura and her dad.
 
Her interview after her first victory was hilarious,
and I thought, “Is a father-daughter comedy duo being born in the world of women’s golf?”
 
Boxing also has more champions than ever before.
 
But the only ones who could be called stars were Joichiro Tatsuyoshi and Daisuke Naito.
 
Naito unintentionally ended up using the Kameda family as stepping stones.
