そんな彼の怪物ぶりを示すエピソードが１つある。
 
1960年、18歳にして世界アマチュア選手権の日本
代表メンバーに選ばれた中部銀次郎の成績は、
惨たんたるものだった。
 
フィラデルフィア郊外にあるメリオンカントリー
クラブは、名にし負う難コース。
 
初日は中部だけでなく多くの選手がスコアを乱し、
アンダーパーでラウンドする者はいなかった。
 
自分のふがいなさに深くうなだれていたところ、
ニクラウスが18番グリーンにやってくるという
声を聞き、中部はその様子を見に行った。
 
この時、ニクラウスはオハイオ州立大学の３年生で、
20歳。
 
ボビー・ジョーンズの再来と言われ、若くして
アマチュアごるふ界の頂点に立っていた男である。
 
この大会の３ヶ月前、アマチュアの資格で出場した
全米オープンではアーノルド・パーマーと死闘を
繰り広げ、
 
惜しくも逆転負けで2位となるほどの活躍を見せて
いたので、彼の名を知らぬ者はいなかった。
 
中部が18番グリーンに駆けつけた時、ニクラウスが
1メートルちょっとのバーディーパットに臨むところ
だった。
 
ところがあろうことか、ニクラウスはそこから
3パットしてボギー。
 
それを見届けた中部は、
なぁんだ、ニクラウスったって、あんな程度か。
と思った。
 
だが、スコアを聞いて仰天。66だというのだ。
 
中部は率直に、
こんな奴にはとてもかなわない
と感じたそうである。
 
ちなみに、中部の4日間のスコアは、
84・83・82・86だった。
 
なっ、こういうとこをちゃんと書くと、
『ジャックすげえ！』ってなるだろ？
 
だって、誰もアンダーパーがいないのに、1mから
3パットしても俺だけ66だぜ。
 
それもまだ20才。それも世界アマチュア選手権で。
そりゃ凄いよ。
